Continuing her unbeaten run in her maiden appearance at the World Boxing Championships, India’s Manju Rani entered the finals of the competition after she defeated Chuthamat Raksat of Thailand in the 48kg category in Ulan Ude, Russia, on Saturday.
Consequently, Manju has assured herself of at least a silver medal as she dominated her bout against her Thai opponent and registered a 4-1 win in the semi-final stage of the competition. The Haryana pugilist had reached the quarterfinals on the back of her win against North Korea’s Kim Hyang Mi in the 48 Kg quarterfinals.
It was not all good news for Indian fans from the World Boxing Championships as the other debutant Jamuna Boro had to settle for a bronze medal. She lost her 54 Kg semi-final match to Huang Hsiao-Wen of Chinese Taipei 5-0.

Meanwhile, Lovlina Borgohain had to stay satisfied with a second successive bronze medal at the World Championships after she lost her 69 Kg category encounter to China’s Yang Liu in a close contest. Borgohain lost the bout 3-2.
Earlier in the day, ace Indian boxer Mary Kom had bowed out of the ongoing World Boxing Championships 2019 and had to settle for a bronze medal after she lost her 51 Kg semi-final match against Turkey’s Busenaz Cakiroglu. Mary Kom lost the match via a split verdict of 1:4 against her.
Post Mary’s bout, India had appealed to the authority to have another look at the points awarded. India had raised a Yellow Card but as per the instructions of the International Boxing Association (AIBA), the appeal is considered only if the scored read 3:2 or 3:1. Since Mary Kom lost the match 1:4, India’s appeal was promptly declined.
